Aura Lattanzi’s style is described as a blend of Abstract Expressionism, and Aura Portraiture.

The most unique aspect of his work is his creative process:

  • A Physical Performance: His painting is described as a total immersion. Critics note the “determined gestures,” the “forceful hand that uses the pen,” and his “security with which he attinges to chance.” The creative act itself is considered a performance.

  • Connection in Aura Portraiture: When painting portraits, he is said to interact deeply with the subject, aiming to “establish such a profound contact… as to become one with him.”

  • Art as Life: A review from the Galleria Arturarte states that his work helps the viewer understand “that art is a dimension of life, indeed, it is life itself.”

Lattanzi’s work is deeply intertwined with his background in Eastern philosophy, shamanism and meditation. For him, the act of painting is as important as the final piece, often taking on the character of a live performance.

Spiritual & Philosophical Influences

Lattanzi’s art cannot be separated from his deep spiritual and philosophical practice.

  • Education: He holds a degree in Religions and Philosophies of India and the Far East.

  • Zen Buddhism: He was a dedicated practitioner of Zen meditation for over a decade at Plum Village in France, the monastery founded by the renowned Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Lattanzi was so involved that in 1994-95, he co-translated Thich Nhat Hanh’s poetry.

  • Meditation: He was first initiated into Vipassana meditation by his professor, Corrado Pensa.

These influences directly inform his artistic process, which relies on immersion, presence, and a connection with the subject.

VIDEO PERFORMANCE

For Gianni Lattanzi art is not just the final result of the creative effort: for him, the dimension of artistic creation is an integral part of the artwork. When he paints, he is totally immersed in the creation of the work. Watching him is captivating. You are struck by the determination of his gestures, the strength of the hand wielding the brush, the confidence with which he draws upon chance. And when he portrays someone, his entire being interacts with that person. He manages to establish such a profound connection with the subject that he becomes one with them. And for this reason, the line flows naturally, as if it knows exactly where to go, when to stop, when to thicken or refine. It is a dance guided by the sound of the flow, like a rushing stream.

Testimonials

"When you get in touch with Gianni Lattanzi, without any difficulty, a never ending space opens wide, at the same time present and explorable. With the sole sense of touch and intuition you confide yourself a bit anxiously, proceeding blindly toward and inside him.Nobody knows the direction of the journey, how long il will last and neither if it will last, but you go on till you get in touch with him, establishing a silent and smiling conversation.

He answers the same way, silently, welcoming us. It is a mutual opening up, two streams mixed together in a game of colors and warmths to wave together in to a powered energy. The soft reflection's game initiates an alternate dance, pushed in to a spiral which recalls and involves by empathy surrounding observers. And suddenly, easily and totally, here it comes the opening which unties personalities, generating their own beautiful peculiarities.

A generous and overwhelming strength generates out of this peculiar "emersion", accompanying and, since now, nurturing our life, with an extraordinary courage of a serene dignity of being."

Laura Turco Liveri, Critico d'Arte

"When he works, he submerges himself totally into the creation of his paintings. Observing him is something captivating. What really impress you are the determination of his gestures; the strength of his hand while holding the brush; the confidence in which he draws from chance. When he portraits somebody, all his being interacts with that person. He is able to establish such a deep contact with the subject, to merge himself into it. For this reason the lines he draws flow in a natural way as if they knew where to go, when to stop, when to become thicker and when to get thinner. It is a dance guided by the sound of flow, as a running stream. Very disciplined therefore, but not so much in learning how to draw. He just did not need it but knowing how not to be sweep away by the flood of his creative energy. His training was "sui generis" and brought him to explore thousands of facets of his creative dimensions, to discover unexpected lands as that of poetries that artists often join to the paintings.

A journey which allowed him to reach an expressive freedom so bold to be frighten, so true to be moved and so beautiful to be wishing to share. It helps us to understand that art is a dimension of life. Indeed, it is life itself."
